All the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. Nehemiah 8:3
As I sat in the auditorium, I faced the pastor with my eyes fixed on him. My posture suggested I was absorbing everything he was saying. Suddenly I heard everybody laughing and clapping. Surprised, I looked about. The preacher had apparently said something humorous, but I had no clue what it might have been. From all appearances I had been listening carefully, but in reality my mind was far away.
It’s possible to hear what is being said but not listen, to watch but not see, to be present and yet absent. In such a condition, we may miss important messages meant for us.
As Ezra read God’s instructions to the people of Judah, “All the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law” (Neh. 8:3). Their attention to the explanation produced understanding (v. 8), which resulted in their repentance and revival. In another situation in Samaria, Philip, after persecution of the believers broke out in Jerusalem (Acts 8:1), reached out to the Samaritan people. The crowd not only observed the miraculous signs he did, but they also “paid close attention to what he said” (v. 6). “So there was great joy in that city” (v. 8).
The mind can be like a wandering adventurer that misses a lot of excitement close by. Nothing deserves more attention than words that help us discover the joy and wonder of our Father in heaven.
Lord, our minds are so prone to distraction. Help us to be present in the moment, especially when listening to those who instruct us in Your ways.

Hãy Chú Ý Thật Kỹ!
Khi ngồi trong giảng đường, tôi dán mắt vào vị mục sư. Trông bộ dạng tôi có vẻ như đang tiếp thu hết mọi điều ông nói. Thình lình, tôi nghe ai đó cười và vỗ tay. Tôi ngạc nhiên nhìn quanh. Rõ ràng là diễn giả đã nói điều gì đó hài hước, nhưng tôi chẳng hề biết gì cả. Bề ngoài thì tôi có vẻ như đang chăm chú lắng nghe, nhưng thật ra, tâm trí tôi để tận đâu đâu.
Người ta có thể nghe những gì người khác nói nhưng không thật sự lắng nghe, nhìn nhưng không thấy, có mặt nhưng lại vắng mặt. Trong tình trạng như vậy, chúng ta có thể bỏ sót những sứ điệp quan trọng có ý nghĩa đối với mình.
Khi E-xơ-ra đọc Lời Chúa cho dân Giu-đa nghe, “Tất cả dân chúng lắng tai nghe đọc sách luật pháp” (Nêh. 8:3). Sự chú tâm nghe giảng của họ đã sản sinh ra sự hiểu biết (c.8), dẫn đến sự ăn năn và sự phục hưng. Trong một tình huống khác tại Sa-ma-ri, Phi-líp đã đến truyền giáo cho dân Sa-ma-ri sau khi cơn bắt bớ các tín hữu bùng nổ tại Giê-ru-sa-lem (Công Vụ 8:1). Đám đông không chỉ quan sát các dấu lạ ông làm, mà còn “chăm chú nghe ông” (c.6). “Vì thế, trong thành tràn ngập niềm vui” (c.8).
Tâm trí có thể giống như một nhà thám hiểm đi lang thang, bỏ sót nhiều điều hứng thú ở gần mình. Không gì xứng đáng để chúng ta chú tâm hơn những lời giúp chúng ta khám phá niềm vui và sự kỳ diệu của Cha trên trời.

2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

2 Ngày mồng một tháng bảy, thầy tế lễ E-xơ-ra đem luật pháp đến trước mặt hội chúng, người nam và nữ, cùng những người có thông sáng nghe hiểu được.
3 Người đứng tại phố ở trước cửa Nước, đọc trong quyển ấy từ rạng đông cho đến trưa, có mặt các người nam và nữ, cùng những kẻ có thể hiểu được. Cả dân sự lắng tai nghe đọc sách luật pháp.
4 Thầy thông giáo E-xơ-ra đứng trên một cái sạp bằng gỗ mà người ta làm nhơn dịp ấy; Ma-ti-thia, Sê-ma, A-na-gia, U-ri, Hinh-kia, và Ma -a-xê-gia, đứng gần người ở bên hữu; còn bên tả người thì có Phê-đa-gia, Mi-sa-ên, Manh-ki-gia, Ha-sum, Hách-ba-đa-na, Xa-cha-ri, và Mê-su-lam.
5 E-xơ-ra dở sách ra trước mặt cả dân sự, vì người đứng cao hơn chúng; khi người dở sách ra, thì dân sự đều đứng dậy.
6 E-xơ-ra ngợi khen Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời cao cả; cả dân sự bèn giơ tay lên, mà đáp lại rằng: A-men, A-men! rồi chúng cúi đầu, sấp mặt xuống đất mà thờ lạy Đức Giê-hô-va.
